Yes it’s cold in Canberra in winter, but that is all but forgotten thanks to the promise of fresh truffles, cosy accommodations, impressive art exhibitions and an incredible selection of restaurants and vineyards to sample. In fact, we’d argue that winter is the perfect time to visit the country’s capital city, especially during truffle season (June – September). Here are 9 delicious reasons to visit Canberra for a long weekend this winter.
A winter weekend stay should be so inviting, warm and chic that it makes you question whether you want to brave the cold and venture out at all. And naturally it must also feature a stunning fireplace.

Compared to the Barossa or the Hunter Valley, say, Canberra District is a nascent wine region, with the first plantings made by CSIRO scientists in 1971. The “Canberra District” name is also something of a misnomer, given most of the 400-plus hectares under vine aren’t in the ACT but further to the north and east in New South Wales.
Yet, despite its youth and geographic peculiarities – or indeed perhaps because of them – there’s a creative, collaborative and energetic spirit that runs through the District’s 40-ish cellar doors, many of which are just over a half-hour’s drive from the city.
